  • Elementary principal April Garner reported summer school enrollment at 245. She also told the Board Lilly received first place in a state wide cursive handwriting contest.
  • Middle school principal Mike Umfleet reported his summer school enrollment was approximately doubled from last year.
  • Superintendent Lee informed the Board recommendations were still advising to budget conservatively for the 2017-18 school year. He also informed the Board the lighting project should be starting the end of the month, the specs for the roofing project were complete, and the leaks in the middle school gym are not because of the roof needing replaced. He said it could possibly be an issue with the HVAC unit. He also told the Board there were some issues with the FEMA building including cracks developing, gaps in doorways, leaks and walls sinking. He told the Board the architect was going to inspect the building and determine what could be done.
  • The Board was told the approximate start-up cost to start middle school baseball and softball was estimated at $15,000. The pros were discussed such as it giving more opportunities to the middle school students and it helping to feed the high school program. Some of the cons that were discussed were finding coaches, the closest middle school softball program being approximately 1 ½ hours away, fields being available for practice and the impact it may have on the city’s rec league. After much discussion the decision was tabled until further information could be learned.
  • Technology director Jerry Tucker and Chris Bradshaw informed the Board there were between 500 and 600 computers in the District. They also informed the Board of the servers, network, programs, virus protection, back-up information and other various information involving the technology department. Discussion was also had concerning the procedures in place for substitute and student teachers, e-rate information, and the pros and cons concerning one to one computing.

  • Voted to approve the elementary, middle and high school handbooks.
