The Scott City R-I Board of Education met in regular session on August 10, 2011. The Board conducted the following business.


  • Representatives from LJ Hart & Co. presented a plan document to the Board concerning the benefits of refinancing the District's existing callable bonds and lease purchase agreements. The bonds are eligible to be refinanced at a lower interest rate in the near future, and the refinancing will save the District much money in interest costs.


  • Building principals Courtney Kern, Michael Umfleet, and Michael Johnson presented the recent MAP/EOC scores to the Board. The test scores show improvement in all buildings. Elementary met the adequate yearly progress targets in both communication arts and mathematics by raising their scores to a level of proficiency of 36.4% and 31.4% respectively. The proficiency level regarding middle school scores in communication arts was 46.2% and mathematics was 39.3%. The high school achieved its highest ever score in communication arts with 71.3% proficiency, and the high school scored 55.2% in mathematics. The District overall raised the communication arts scores by 3.1% to 57.6%, and mathematics scores were raised by 2% to a level of 39.2%.


  • Transportation director Michael Umfleet reported to the Board on the status of the transportation department. He spoke to the Board regarding driver safety training, bus inspections, audit information, and the goals for the upcoming year. He noted that the District again achieved the "Total Fleet Excellence" award from the Missouri Highway Patrol for having a 100% approval rating during the 2011 bus inspection.


  • Approved the bus routes for 2011-12.


  • Set the tax rate for the 2011-12 school year at $3.2694 for the incidental fund and $.49 for the debt service fund.


In Closed Session, the Board of Education conducted the following business.

  • Hired Travis Estes as assistant middle school football coach and Nick Grassi as JV baseball coach.
